Ammar Elamin added to his ATP ranking points tally in style today, defeating eighth seed Andy Andrade 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 in a thrilling three-set battle at the ATP Challenger 75 Dublin.
The Irish wildcard, competing in his first ever Challenger event, showed nerves of steel when it mattered most, overcoming a spirited fightback from the Ecuadorian eighth seed to seal a stunning victory in two hours and twelve minutes.
It is precisely moments like this that make the ATP Challenger 75 Dublin so important. Hosting a Challenger event on home soil gives Irish players the opportunity to compete at this level and earn Challenger points they simply wouldn’t have access to otherwise, points that can transform a career and open doors on the international circuit.
Today, Ammar Elamin stepped through one of those doors. Tomorrow he’s first on court against Thanasi Kokkinakis the Australian who won the 2022 Australian Open doubles title alongside Nick Kyrgios and reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 65, but who is currently working his way back to full fitness following major pectoral surgery last year.
Irish wildcard James McGloughlin faced a tough test against ninth seed Yi Zhou in his ATP Challenger debut, going down 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour. A valuable experience for the young Irishman on the biggest stage of his career so far.
The last Irish player of the day, Dylan Leeman, who earned his place in the ATP Challenger 75 Dublin through the wildcard playoff last week, faced a difficult afternoon against 12th seed Charlie Broom, with the match going the Briton’s way. A tough day, but Dylan’s journey to get here was an achievement in itself.
