Waterford’s Vincent Keane honoured with Mayor’s Reception

There was a wonderful occasion in Waterford on Wednesday 20 May as tennis player Vincent Keane was celebrated at a Mayor’s Reception hosted by Waterford City and County Council – with Tennis Ireland’s Munster Regional Development Officer Liz Clifford among those who gathered to mark his remarkable achievements.

Vincent was diagnosed with glaucoma at 24 and has lived with significant vision deterioration since. But his response to that challenge has been extraordinary. He discovered blind and visually impaired tennis, and has gone on to become one of the most decorated players in these islands.

His record speaks for itself: three national titles, two UK national titles, bronze at the 2025 European Championships in Poland, and the prestigious Currie Cup in two consecutive years – awarded to the player who wins the most tournaments across the UK circuit. He finished 2025 as the number one ranked B2 male player in the UK.

Presenting Vincent with his award, the Cathaoirleach of the Comeragh District, Cllr John O’Leary, described him as an example of “courage, determination, and extraordinary perseverance,” and spoke of how his positivity and success inspire others to believe that challenges can be overcome.

Joining Liz at the event were representatives from Tramore Tennis Club and Vision Sports Ireland, alongside members of the Comeragh District Council and Vincent’s family and friends.

Tennis Ireland is proud to support blind and visually impaired tennis as part of its commitment to making the game accessible and welcoming for everyone. Vincent is a brilliant example of what tennis can give people – and what people can give back to the sport.
