Winning the Junior Four Nations title this weekend is a tremendous achievement for Irish tennis and one that everyone involved should be immensely proud of. To secure the title outright for the first time in 12 years, and to do so away from home for the first time, makes this success even more special.
We built on the momentum of last year’s shared victory with England and took another significant step forward as a team. Every player was a credit to their country throughout the competition. They left absolutely everything on the court and showed the commitment, resilience and pride needed to bring this title home.
At Tennis Ireland, we have placed a huge emphasis on creating a genuine team environment, both through our national training programmes and at our international team events. Tennis can often be viewed as an individual sport, but we want our players to understand the power of being part of something bigger than themselves. To say that these players bought into that philosophy would be an understatement. They supported one another, competed for one another and represented Ireland in a manner that was exemplary both on and off the court.
It is true that we have a very special group of players, but we also have a very special coaching staff at Tennis Ireland. To each and every one of them, I want to say thank you for your dedication, support and professionalism.
As Performance Director, I get the easy job of collecting the trophy, but it is the monumental unseen work that goes on behind the scenes from our coaches and support team that makes achievements like this possible.
I would also like to make special mention of our Under 12 and Under 18 teams, both of whom won their respective sections this weekend. Their success highlights the strength of the pathway we are building and reflects the hard work being done right across our performance programme.
A massive thank you also to the parents who travelled to Nottingham. Your support throughout the weekend was superb and greatly appreciated by everyone involved.
Team tennis is unique in our sport. It creates friendships, experiences and memories that last a lifetime. More than anything, I am delighted for these players. They have worked incredibly hard for this moment and thoroughly deserve their success.
