Ireland’s top junior players have descended on Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club this week for the newly formatted William Fry Junior Lawn Championships of Ireland, the biggest shake-up the historic “Fitz” has seen in years.
For the first time, the William Fry Junior Lawn Championships of Ireland will run across two weeks with split age groups, giving our best players the opportunity to compete in multiple age groups.
Schedule:
U14s and U18s: 11 to 16 August, finals day Sunday 16th August
U12s and U16s: 16 to 22 August, finals day Saturday 22nd August
U10s: 20 to 22 August, finals day Saturday 22nd August
The new format also sees the return of the U10 age group at the William Fry Junior Lawn Championships of Ireland and the removal of the traditional qualification stage, meaning the country’s best young players will get their shot at Fitz glory. Some of the top ranked players will have the opportunity to compete across both age groups.
All of the players competing this week have come up through the AerCap TI Junior Kids national and regional tours, which give young players across the country the coaching frameworks, competition structure and progression route that leads to events like this. The strength of this year’s William Fry Junior Lawn Championships of Ireland reflects the depth that pathway continues to build.
For the players stepping onto court this week, William Fry Junior Lawn Championships of Ireland is more than a tournament. It is the moment where years of early mornings, club sessions and Regional and National Tour events culminate in a shot at a national title, and for many, a first taste of what a future in the sport could look like.
Cian Blake, Performance Development Director, said:
“This year’s William Fry Junior Lawn Championships of Ireland at Fitzwilliam marks an exciting new chapter for junior tennis in Ireland. The introduction of the new format allows many of our top players to compete across multiple age groups while playing on a consistent surface throughout the event, creating a stronger and more challenging competitive environment. One of the most significant benefits is the introduction of a multi-match format for our Under 12 players, an initiative that is vital for the long-term development of young athletes as it provides more meaningful match play opportunities at a crucial stage of their progression.
We are also delighted to see the return of the Under 10 National Championships through the new ‘Road to Fitz’ pathway. This year, we had 91 entries across six qualifying events around the country, culminating in the final eight boys and eight girls earning their place in the AerCap TI Junior Kids Finals. Delivering this event in a multi-match format is equally important and provides our youngest players with a valuable national championship experience while encouraging their long-term development in the sport.
The expanded format reflects Tennis Ireland’s commitment to creating better competitive opportunities for our players at every stage of the pathway. We would like to sincerely thank AerCap for their continued support of junior tennis through the AerCap TI Junior Kids programme, which plays such an important role in helping young players develop, compete and progress on their tennis journey.”
With finals spread across both weekends, there is no shortage of action to come, from the first serve of the U14s and U18s through to the U10s, 12s and 16s wrapping up the championship on 22 August.
Tennis Ireland thanks AerCap for their continued support of junior tennis in Ireland through the AerCap TI Junior Kids programme.
