Ireland’s Davis Cup Team Target Promotion in Chisinau
Four-Strong Squad Selected for Europe Group III Round Robin Format with Promotion Places on Offer
Competition Runs 10 to 13 June 2026 in Moldova
Tennis Ireland has named an experienced four-man Davis Cup team which lost to a strong Syrian team last February, to compete in the Europe Group lll level of the competition in Moldova this June.
Michael Agwi, Peter Buldorini, Conor Gannon and Charlie Barry will be targeting a promotion place that would see them regain a spot in the World Group II Playoffs in 2027.
The Europe Group lll competition is a round-robin one which takes place on outdoor clay courts in Chisinau from Wednesday 10 to Saturday 13th June. The top team from each of two groups will earn automatic promotion to the World Group II Playoffs in 2027, with a third promotional spot decided by the playoff positions on Saturday.
The other teams competing are Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kosovo, Latvia, Moldova, Montenegro and North Macedonia, with North Macedonia, Georgia and Latvia, like Ireland, coming into this level following relegation.
Commenting on the strength of the opposition, Davis Cup team captain Conor Niland said:
‘We will be up against strong players. Saba Purtseladze of Georgia has reached a career-high ranking of 237, while North Macedonia’s Kalin Ivanovski peaked at 305 in 2023, but the players and I will be doing everything we can to achieve promotion. We’re excited at the prospect of getting back to Group ll and I’m confident we will put in a strong performance.’
With promotion the only goal, Ireland will be giving everything on the clay courts of Chisinau.
The matches will be available to stream on tennisireland.ie.
