Establishment of a new Volunteer Recognition Programme
League Tennis players from all over Ireland will gather in Elm Park Golf and Lawn Tennis Club on the weekend of October 4th and 5th for the inaugural National League Finals Weekend 2025.
This event marks the first step in an ambitious long-term plan to establish a permanent National Finals Weekend to showcase league tennis across the island. The concept has been under discussion for some time and we are delighted to bring this special event to life. While this year’s edition will necessarily be modest in scale, the intention is to build it year by year into a flagship occasion in the Tennis Ireland calendar.
Our ambition is that the National League Finals will:
- Become a central annual gathering point for players, clubs, and volunteers across the country.
- Provide visibility and prestige for league competitions at every level.
- Grow in profile and participation to rival other major events in the domestic tennis calendar.
This inaugural weekend will feature chosen teams from the six tennis leagues:
- Belfast and District League
- North West League
- Connacht League
- Munster League
- Dublin Lawn Tennis Council (DLTC) League
- Leinster Regional Leagues
As part of the weekend, Tennis Ireland will also establish our first volunteer recognition programme. Again, our ambition is to build this programme over the years ahead, where Clubs and League will be invited to nominate their top volunteers whose contribution has been vital to the running of their clubs, supporting the local tennis community running local competitions, so that those individuals may be honoured at a gala dinner over the weekend.
This year the focus will be on the launch of two new perpetual awards:
- The Kay Lonergan Award for Contribution to Parks Tennis, created in memory of Kay’s outstanding service to Parks Tennis and agreed with her family to ensure her legacy is remembered annually.
- A National Award for Contribution to Tennis, to mark a single individual who has made a significant life-time contribution to tennis
Taken together, these events represent both a starting point and a statement of intent: Tennis Ireland is committed to growing our National League Finals into a major annual event to celebrate our top competitors at all levels, and our most valued and loyal volunteers.
