Tennis Ireland has announced the national team that will represent Ireland at the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Europe Group III campaign in Chisinau, Moldova. The team features a strong blend of experience and youth, with Anna Bowtell returning to international duty for the first time since 2021.
Joining Bowtell are Celine Simunyu, Sinéad Lohan, Breda Brennan, and Georgia Lily Lynn-Browne, as they aim to secure promotion to Europe Group II for 2026.
Building on 2024 Success
Ireland heads into this year’s tournament with confidence, following a strong 2024 campaign where they were seeded 6th but finished top of their group. That performance led to a promotional playoff against Finland and Cyprus, ultimately resulting in an impressive third-place finish out of 11 teams.
This year, Ireland is once again among 12 competing nations, with only one team earning promotion. Matches will take place from Monday 16th to Saturday 21st June in Chisinau. The participating countries include: Malta, Moldova, Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, San Marino, Iceland, Montenegro, Luxembourg, Finland, and Ireland.
Voices from the Team
Team Captain John McGahon is optimistic about the challenge ahead:
“As we prepare to compete in Moldova this June, we embrace the honour of representing Ireland on the Billie Jean King Cup stage. Our team is fuelled with passion and experience. With unity and determination, we will rise to the challenge, support one another through every match, and leave everything on the tennis court.”
Assistant Coach Paul Casey will again support McGahon in 2025, bringing valuable continuity and experience to the squad.
Celine Simunyu, who has been a key member of the team since her debut in 2021, commented:
“I’m really looking forward to what the Billie Jean King Cup will bring this year. I’m always proud to be part of the team – ready to compete, support each other, and give it everything we’ve got.”
Performance Development Director Cian Blake added:
“The team performed well in 2024 and I know they are eager to build on that this year. The team has a nice balance to it and I’m sure they will compete with all they have, as they always do. We wish John, Paul and the team the very best of luck.”
