What started as a simple initiative to make tennis more accessible to adults in the Dundalk area has grown into something truly special.
Thanks to North Leinster RDO Ann Marie Breen, TI introduced a free adult tennis coaching project in Dundalk, County Louth, giving local adults the opportunity to learn, improve their skills, and enjoy the game in a friendly and welcoming environment.
The initiative brought together people of different ages and playing abilities who shared one thing in common: a love of tennis and a desire to get active, meet new people, and have fun.
Under the guidance of Coach Gary Rodriguez, the players not only developed their tennis skills but also built friendships and a strong sense of community. What began as a series of free coaching sessions quickly became much more than just lessons.
The players decided to keep playing together and set up a tennis social club, which has now grown to an amazing 46 members.
Every Monday, the group comes together to play, enjoy some friendly competition, support one another, and most importantly, have fun. New friendships have formed, confidence has grown, and tennis has become a regular part of the members’ weekly lives.
This is a wonderful example of the lasting impact a single initiative can have within a community. A free coaching programme became the starting point for a group of people to discover not only tennis, but also friendship, belonging, and an active lifestyle.
From one free coaching project to 46 members and a thriving Monday tennis community, this is the power of sport to bring people together.
A huge thank you to Ann Marie for making it happen, and to Coach Gary Rodriguez and all the players who turned that opportunity into a successful and growing tennis community in Dundalk.
The lessons may have started on the court, but the friendships and community built from them continue far beyond it. Contact your Regional Development Officer to see what’s going on in your area.
