Gerry Clarke RIP

Gerry Clarke’s passing marks the loss of one of the most influential figures in Irish tennis across the modern era — a man whose impact stretched from the 1940s right through to the final years of his extraordinary playing life.

In 1984, Gerry founded the Irish Veterans Tennis Association and, in doing so, effectively instigated veterans’ tennis in Ireland as we know it today. Even after the association was disbanded two years ago, his legacy continued in a very practical way: the remaining funds were distributed to support junior tennis in Ireland — a fitting final chapter for an organisation built on Gerry’s lifelong belief in participation, competition, and giving back.

A former Irish international in his early playing days, Gerry went on to become a living archive of the sport here — renowned for an encyclopaedic knowledge of Irish tennis across all ages and eras. He was a life member of both Templeogue Lawn Tennis Club and Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club, and a true legend of the game.

Gerry passed away at the age of 98, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that spanned eight decades.

Chair of Tennis Ireland’s Board, Ronan Reid said on Gerry’s passing:

“I first played Gerry in Templeogue as a young 14 year old. Gerry was in his 50’s and a fierce competitor. He was a gentleman , a great organiser and someone who always encouraged you to play, no matter what age you were. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered.”

President of Tennis Ireland, Letty Lucas, also shared a few words in tribute:

Gerry Clarke was a much-loved and benevolent grandfather of Irish tennis, a man whose passion for the game and for its people was felt by all who knew him. By his leadership, dedication and  actions,  the phrase “Tennis is a game for life”, was a belief he lived by through his introduction and development of Veterans tennis—now Masters tennis—for players over 40. While Gerry enjoyed great success on court, winning many National singles titles in both Ireland and England, his greatest joy came from watching and supporting others. He was a familiar presence at the back of courts, recalling players’ abilities and past matches in remarkable detail, always offering encouragement and positive advice on how to improve or overcome future opponents. Gerry Clarke will continue to be remembered as a true legend of Irish tennis, and we extend our sincere condolences to his beloved wife Breda and to all his family.

Details of Gerry’s funeral can be found here.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Here is a wonderful interview with Gerry in Carrickmines LTC when he was presented with an award for his services to Irish tennis.
