Men’s Irish Open

The FBD’s Men’s Irish Open took place during Dublin’s hottest week of sunshine in the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club last week.

Frederik Nielson (DEN) and Edward Corrie (GBR) defeated Ireland’s Peter Bothwell  and David O’Hare in the Men’s Double’s final event.

Nielson who is a Wimbledon doubles champion from 2012 and held an ATP doubles ranking of 17 in 2013 together with his partner Edward Corrie proved to have all the answers for the Irish pair of Bothwell/O’Hare.  Having lost the first set 6-2, the Irish duo managed to exert some pressure in the second set but eventually lost out in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.

Ireland’s Sam Barry went out on a scoreline of 6-2, 6-4 in the semi-final to Joshua Milton (GBR), the no 3 seed; Milton went on to win the Men’s singles title.

The Irish tennis community got to see some great tennis talent from home and abroad.  A big thank you to all the officials, volunteers, Ballkids and supporters who contributed to the weeks success.

This is a great opportunity for Irish talented players to get a taste of an international tennis circuit event on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour.

In many ways the Tennis Europe Junior Tour is a dress rehearsal for life on the professional circuit.

Tennis Europe Dublin week 2 will be hot on its heels with full details on the draws coming here soon.

National Tennis Day

National Tennis Day took place on 5th July this year with many clubs around the country opened their doors to welcome visitors to their courts and test run this great sport.

If your club intends to hold an Open Day anytime during the year, please get in touch to let us know about it so we can post it to our website.  Above all do not forget to submit a photo of your Open Day and you could be in with a chance to win a prize.

One photo per club can be submitted with or without a caption to intern@tennisireland.ie

We ask that you list the number of participants that attended your Open Day and let us know how many new members your club gained as a result of hosting the day.

For those clubs that have had their Open Day and attracted new members, that’s only the start! Now you need to integrate the new members, encourage them to play on the courts and maintain their membership.

A successful tennis club is a club that can satisfy the needs of all its members of all ages, at all levels of ability. Part of the development teams role is to assist, advise and support affiliated tennis clubs so that they can provide on and off court activities to their members.   Check out a number of resources below and contact details of our Development Officers, ready to help.
