Our final Ezine of 2013 and an exciting year to look forward to in 2014, with our Davis Cup team to travel to Belarus and our FedCup team jetting off to compete in Estonia.  And there’s more exciting offers from our sponsor AIG to ring in the Christmas season. Irish Davis Cup and Fed Cup Teams Announced

 

DAVIS CUP BY BNP PARIBAS
The BNP Paribas Irish Davis Cup Team to face Belarus in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Euro/Africa Zone Group II first round tie has been announced.


The team of  Sam Barry, James Cluskey, Daniel Glancy & John Morrissey will depart for Minsk in late January for the tie which takes place at the Republic Olympic Training Centre for Tennis from the 31 st January – 2nd February 2014.


Both Louk Sorensen and James McGee declared themselves unavailable for selection.

 

The winners of this tie will face a second round match against either Egypt or Moldova at home from 4th – 6th April 2014.


FED CUP BY BNP PARIBAS

Meanwhile three players have been named for the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Euro/Africa Zone Group III competition taking place in Estonia at the start of February.


Amy Bowtell, Rachael Dillon & Jane Fennelly were selected whilst a play-off competition for the remaining place will take place on the 27th & 28th December at the National Tennis Centre, Dublin City University  between the following players:-

 

Jenny Claffey

Ruth Copas

Holly Monahan

Caroline Lynch

Sinead Kennedy

Lauren Deegan

Nicola Drummy

Julie Byrne

Sinead Lohan and Grainne O’Neill were both unavailable for selection on account of academic commitments and Lynsey McCullough on account of injury.

Sam Barry wins Qatar F3 Futures

 

Congratulations to Sam Barry who defeated Liam Brody (GBR) on Saturday 7th December to win Qatar’s F3 Futures on a scorleline of 7/6 6/4.

 

Barry got off to a strong start breaking Brody in the third game but an exchange of breaks in the opening set left him serving for 6-6 which he did comfortably. He won the first set with a tie-break score 7-2.

 

The second set went with serve with Barry winning his service game to love at 4-4 before breaking Brody’s serve and taking the match.

 

This is Sam Barry’s first final on the ITF pro circuit. His ATP ranking has jumped from 601 in Dec 2012 to a current career high ranking of 410.
