Ranking Freeze Update

Tennis Ireland initiated a Ranking Freeze on March 20th to protect the System and Players form unfair changes in ranking during the Covid-19 Pandemic, this was in line with International best practice. Weekly rankings were processed from week 2020-12 extending the equivalent 2019 results, these are clearly marked ‘Ranking Freeze 2020 Week – XX – Tournament Name’

As we now prepare to return to competition in a safe manner using the Tennis Ireland Return to Competition Guidelines we have to also begin coming out of the Ranking Freeze in order to return our Rankings to normal. This is not an easy process.

Our goal with a Return to Ranking is to provide stability and fairness for all players. There will be separate plans for our Tennis Ireland Junior Rankings and our Tennis Ireland Rankings.

Junior Ranking

Our plan is to continue applying new Ranking Freeze points for Weeks 30 and 31, we are doing this because access to competition is limited to 1 tournament in each of these first two weeks back. We will also process points as normal for Tramore(W30) 1 and St. Anne’s(W31) 2.

We will not be processing Ranking Freeze points for Week 32 to Week 34, however we will maintain the Ranking Freeze for all previous weeks.

From Week 35 onward we will begin to delete the Ranking Freeze points on a week by week basis. Week 35 will see Ranking Freeze points from Week 12 removed.

This process will continue week by week until all Ranking Freeze points are removed by Week 3 2021 3, 4

Summary

  • Week 31 – 32:       Results from weeks 2020-30 / 2020-31 will be processed as normal – Ranking Freeze 2020 Week 30 / 31 will also be processed.
  • Week 33 – 34:      Results from week 32 / 33 will be processed as normal. No Ranking Freeze points will be processed.
  • Week 35:               Results from week 34 processed as normal – The first week of Ranking Freeze Points I.e. Ranking Freeze 2020 Week 12 will be deleted.
  • Week 36 on:         Results from previous week will be processed as normal and next oldest Ranking Freeze Week will be deleted.
  • Junior National Rankings will be fully returned to normal cycle by week 2021-3 when Ranking Freeze Week 2020 31 is deleted.
    1. As Tramore Junior Open is taking place in its original week, only points from 2020 will be processed. Ranking Freeze points for this tournament will not be processed.
    2. Rescheduled tournaments will have their Ranking Freeze points deleted as they occur rather than in weekly sequence. This means for example St. Anne’s Junior Open will have its Ranking Freeze points removed in Week 32 rather than Week 43.
    3. Only one set of points for a tournament will be in place at any time, Ranking Freeze Points or new 2020 Points.
    4. Points gained from Tournaments in 2020 will deleted as normal after 52 weeks or as they occur in 2021, whichever comes first.
