Criteria for Team and Representative Selection

Selection criteria for all players (Seniors, Juniors & Veterans) representing Ireland at international level and their Provinces at Interprovincial level.
  1. Confirmed availability for selection; (“availability”).
  2. Where applicable (i.e. in a match, tournament or competition that will involve singles play), objective merit as a singles player, based on international (ATP, WTA, ITF, ETA), national and provincial rankings, tournament and other competitive results; (“singles ability”).
  3. Where applicable (i.e. in a match, tournament or competition that will involve doubles play) objective merit as a doubles player, based on international (ATP, WTA, ITF, ETA), national and provincial rankings, tournament and other competitive results; (“doubles ability”).
  4. Where applicable, the deemed benefit of an established or complimentary doubles partnership, based on international (ATP, WTA, ITF, ETA), national and provincial rankings, tournament and other competitive results; (“doubles partnership”).
  5. Court surface (where, for instance, a player is more or less suited to a slower or faster surface as applicable); (“the surface specialist factor”).
  6. Developmental benefit of experience of selection for a promising player with obvious future representative potential; (“the future potential factor”).
  7. Ambitions of player in the game, whether committed currently or in the future to full-time or intensive play; (“the commitment factor”).
  8. Historic record of achievement and success at the level in question such as is likely to benefit a team; (“the experience factor”).
  9. Historic and current desire and commitment to represent at national and provincial level; (“the desire to represent factor”).
  10. Contribution to, and support of, the domestic game; (“the loyal servant factor”).
  11. The principles of sharing opportunities for selection (where a number of players of broadly similar ability in an age-group are vying for selection, it may be appropriate to spread opportunity widely over a period of time, rather than concentrate it in one or two players); (“sharing of opportunities”).
  12. Sportsmanship, conduct and disciplinary record (“the good ambassador factor”).
