Simon Carr’s run at the US Open ends

Simon Carr’s tremendous run in the US Open came to an end on Thursday night as he bowed out in the third round of the boys’ singles event.

After wins over American Sangeet Sridhar and France’s Jaimee-Floyd Angele, the Irish No 1  succumbed to Russia’s Timofey Skatov on a 5-7 6-2 1-6 scoreline, after two hours and eight minutes on No 14 Court at Flushing Meadows. His opponent had earlier defeated the No 3 seed, Austria’s Jurij Rodionov.

Having come agonisingly close to taking the first set at 5-3 & 40-30 up only to lose it 5-7 he bounced back immediately with an early break in the second set which he took 6-2.

After an early exchange of service breaks in the third and final set it was the Russian who managed to establish his dominance and close out the match with a decisive final set score of 6-1
