Simon Carr bows out of Australian Open

It just wasn’t to be for Simon Carr today. He took on the Russian Alexey Zakharov in the first round. After battling through an opening service game which lasted 15 minutes and in which 7 break points were saved and 13 duece points were played the match eventually settled into a rhythm. However Carr struggled with his receiving game today and couldn’t find a way into his opponent’s game. They went to 6-6 and Carr lost the first set tie-break on a score of 7-4

Zakharov got the early break in the second set to go 3-1 up and serving for the match at 5-3 and 40-0 Carr rallied to save 5 match points. The Irish supporter’s voices carried around the stadium and despite Carr’s brave efforts in the closing stages it was Zakharof who emerged victorious today.
