25 Jan Georgia Drummy’s 2016 Australian Open draws to a close
It’s been an amazing month for Georgia Drummy and if you haven’t heard about it by now you’ve been in hibernation!
With an ITF Ranking of no 220 she headed off to Australia in a bid to play in the Australian Open.
Listed well down the alternates just before the withdrawal deadline expectations were low that she would make the cut.
However she did make the Qualifiers and she adapted to the Australian Open conditions immediately winning her two qualifying rounds and reaching the maindraw, thereby making Irish Tennis history as one of the youngest players in the draw and definitely the youngest ever Irish player to compete in a Junior Grand Slam.
Although she lost her first round match against her doubles partner Shimizu from Japan her achievements cast a real ray of sunshine on Irish Tennis and in particular bode well for her future Grand Slam career.
Georgia is a member of the BNP National Tennis Academy
