U16s IC Euopean Tournament

The Irish U16 team have just returned from the IC European U16 tournament in Barcelona where they finished joint third with Italy out of a total 8 teams. The teams involved in the tournament were Ireland, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Spain, Slovenia, Luxembourg and Italy.

The Irish IC mission statement is ‘To promote friendship and sportsmanship in tennis between Ireland and other countries across the life cycle by hosting fixtures with other IC countries, by supporting tennis development in Ireland and by providing mentorship for young Irish players

Garry Cahill was the Non-playing team captain and those selected to play for Ireland were Sean Collins, Thomas Brennan, Georgia Drummy, Jenny Timotin, Simon Carr ( sub injured)

 

The team played three ties in total losing a hard fought tie 1-5 to GB in their first round which included a championship tie-breaks in both doubles.

 

They beat Slovenia 5-1 in the second tie and finished the event strongly beating Sweden 4-2 to end up in joint third place. A final playoff was not possible due to bad weather.

 

Team Captain Garry Cahill said ‘I am very proud of their result but more importantly of how the team behaved on and off the court and I am sure that they fought very hard at all times’
