Niland and Sorensen in US Open Main Draw
Conor Niland has qualified for his second grand slam of the year this evening in advancing to the mens singles main draw of the US Open. Joining him in the main draw was fellow Irish player Louk Sorensen to make it two Irishmen in the main draw.
In achieving this, Niland and Sorensen are the first Irish players to qualify for the US Open.
Niland defeated Matwe Middelkoop(NED) 2-6 6-1 6-4 in the final round of the qualifiers to earn a place in the main draw.
Louk Sorensen was scheduled to face Gastao Elias (POR) in the second round yesterday but this match was postponed until today due to inclement weather conditions at Flushing Meadows.
Louk defeated Elias this afternoon 6-4 6-1 to also qualify for the finals and later on this evening overcame Austria’s Martin Fischer on a scoreline 7-6 6-1.
Niland will face no. 1 seeded Novak Djokovic (SRB) in the first round of the main draw while Louk Sorensen’s first round challenge is no. 6 seeded Robin Soderling (SWE)
