Niland does Ireland proud at Wimbledon
Conor Niland faced Adrian Mannarino of France in the mens singles first round at Wimbledon on Tuesday afternoon in a first for the Irish player and a feat that has not been achieved in over thirty years in Irish tennis.
Tennis fans all over Ireland were tuned in to televisions and online streaming and those lucky enough to be there in SW19 surrounded the courtside in a sea of green. A second round match against Federer was so close but Mannarino overcome Niland in the end with a final scoreline of 4-6 6-4 7-6 (9-7) 4-6 6-4
The Irish no. 1 earned a place in the mens singles main draw of Wimbledon on Saturday afternoon with a 6-3 7-6 6-4 win over Croatian Nikola Mektic in the final round of the qualifiers.
Niland currently holds a ranking of 184 and represented Ireland in March of this year at Davis Cup. A place in the main draw is a first for 29 year old who won the Salzburg and Ramat Hasharon Challengers in 2010.
