Following on a series of difficult and debilitating injuries since early 2010, Louk Sorensen has today announced his retirement from professional tennis.
Louk achieved a career highlight in January 2010 in reaching the second round of the Australian Open (the first Irish player to ever do so) and his ranking at that point climbed to 213. However, since that point his career has been blighted by a series of injuries. A knee injury suffered some six weeks ago proved to be the tipping point and it is with great regret that Louk has now reached his decision to retire from professional tennis.
Irish Davis Cup Captain Garry Cahill said today “Louks retirement is a huge blow for the Irish Davis Cup team. Our 2011 programme requires us to play some very tough opponents and Louks absence from the team has been very difficult for us. Louk has had a really impressive Davis Cup career to date and he is a proven match winner in international competition. We acknowledge his enormous talent and while his retirement is a setback, we understand very well the huge disappointments he has suffered with injuries throughout his career.”
Louk will not be lost to tennis for the immediate future as the Sorensen family invested recently in an indoor tennis centre in Stuttgart, Germany. Without doubt Louk´s experience on the professional tour over the years will be an important factor in the success of this venture.
