Niland suffers defeat at Australian Open
Conor Niland faced Kevin Kim (USA) in the first round of the Australian Open Qualifiers on Wednesday morning in Melbourne but was unfortunate to suffer a 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (8-6) defeat to the American. This is Kim’s third appearance at the Australian Open with his best performance in 2005 when he reached the third round of the mens singles. His next challenge is Andrej Martin (SVK).
Niland (seeded no. 16) reached the third round of the mens singles qualifying stages at his first Australian Open last year but since then has won two mens singles titles on the ATP circuit, the first at the Israel Open in May and the second in Austria at the Salzburg Open. Conor also represented Ireland at Davis Cup in March and July.
