Tennis Ireland appoints new Irish Davis Cup Captain
Tennis Ireland today announced the appointment of Garry Cahill as the Non-Playing Irish Davis Cup Captain for the period 2011-2012.
Garry has been employed as Technical Director with Tennis Ireland for the past seven years and obviously will continue in this position. His main responsibility is the management of the BNP Paribas National Tennis Academy where he works with Irelands leading players such as Conor Niland, Sam Barry & Amy Bowtell.
Garry replaces Sean Sorensen as the Irish Non-Playing Captain. Sean was appointed in 2007 and has completed four very successful years in the position.
At the announcement of the appointment this morning Garry said “The Davis Cup Captaincy is one of the most prestigious jobs in Irish tennis and I am thrilled to have been appointed by the Board of Tennis Ireland yesterday. I work on a day-to-day basis with most of the players who are in contention to make the 2011 team and for me the task of preparing the team to face Luxembourg in March starts today.”
Des Allen, CEO Tennis Ireland said earlier today “Garry has had great success with the ascent of the leading Irish players through the World Rankings over the past couple of years. I am certain that he is best placed to integrate his role as Davis Cup Captain with the work he does at the BNP Paribas National Tennis Academy. I know he holds the respect of all our leading players and that’s a great place to start in this job.”
Garry has resigned his position as Fed Cup Captain with effect from the end of this year in order to concentrate on the Davis Cup position. Tennis Ireland will begin the process of recruiting his Fed Cup team successor very early in the New Year.
Ireland play Luxembourg in Davis Cup in Dublin on the 4th-6th March 2011 and, depending on first round results, we may host Great Britain in a second round match in Dublin on the 8th-10th July 2011.
