Barry off to a winning start at US Open

Sam Barry got off to a winning start in his US Open Junior campaign last night with a comfortable 6-1 6-3 over World No. 30 Nick Chappell (USA) at Flushing Meadows.

Sam’s opponent in the second round is World No. 5 Damir Dzumhur  (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and this match is scheduled for Wednesday.

National Coach Garry Cahill is with Barry in New York and he attributed the win to Sam’s success to the return of serve. "Sam won 60% of the points on the return which is a very good statistic at this level. The best players in the world are here in New York but Sam has a great chance if he goes on playing like this " said Cahill.

Sam is the leading Junior at the BNP Paribas National Tennis Academy in Dublin.

Other Irish interest at Flushing Meadows… John Morrissey lost his first round doubles (with Ben Wagland) in a Champions tie-break.
