Sixth-seeded Ciaran Fitzgerald faced Luke Bambridge of Great Britain yesterday in the first round of week two in Nottingham. Fitzgerald put up a fight, but was defeated 4-6 7-6(7) 6-3. He remains in Nottingham for the doubles competition, where he is paired with Lewis Burton of Great Britain. The pair enters the draw as the top seed, advancing to the second round after a bye.
On the girls’ side, Grainne O’Neill was victorious in the first round. She defeated Helen Thorpe of Great Britain on a scoreline of 6-2 7-5 to advance. O’Neill will face Caroline Kallberg of Sweden in the second round.
Emily Madill was not as lucky in the girls’ singles. Madill suffered a tough loss to Grace Lola Lymer-Sullivan of Great Britain, 6-0 2-6 7-5. She remains in Nottingham this week to compete in the girls’ doubles, where she is paired with Kyria Dunford of Great Britain. The duo will face Grace Dixon and Sophie Nelson of Great Britain in the first round.
