Tom Barry continued play in Mexico City yesterday where he was competing in the 30th ITF Seniors World Individual Championships. Barry earned a first round victory over Ronald Carlson of Mexico, 6-4 6-1, before being knocked out by Frank Lapre of the Netherlands in the second round.
Liam Cassidy is also in competition in Mexico. He was knocked out in the first round of the men’s 40 singles, but remains in the tournament in the men’s 40 doubles. Cassidy is the top seed in the doubles with Bart Theelen of the Netherlands, earning him a first round bye. The pair will take on Paul Kleverlann and Chris O’Mara of Australia in the second round of the tournament.
On the women’s side, Lesley O’Halloran is seeing success in Mexico City in the women’s 45 singles and doubles. In the singles competition O’Halloran is seeded seventh, which earned her a first round bye. She went on to defeat Debra Hyde of South Africa 7-5 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. O’Halloran, who is currently ranked 121 in the world of women over 35, will face third-seeded Mariana Hollman of America to determine who will advance to the semifinals.
In the doubles tournament, O’Halloran and partner Olga Shaposhnikova of Russia have advanced to the semifinals. The top seeded pair defeated Martha Delia Rodriguez and Marcela Rubalcava Jiminez of Mexico 6-0 6-0. O’Halloran and Sharposhnikova will face Jaana Ahlamaa-Tuompo and Silja Johansson of Finland in the semifinals.
