ITF Seniors World Individual Championships Mexico
Tom Barry, Liam Cassidy and Lesley O’Halloran will remain in Mexico this week for the 30th ITF Seniors World Individual Championships. All three players just finished representing Ireland in the team tournaments.
Barry is competing in the men’s 50 singles in Mexico City. In the first round he earned a victory over Ronald Carlson of Mexico, winning the match 6-4 6-1. He will face Frank Lapre of the Netherlands in the second round. As the ninth seed, Lapre advances after a first round bye. In the team competition, Barry was a part of Ireland’s Fred Perry Cup team, which finished 14th out of 20.
Cassidy is playing in both the men’s 40 singles and doubles. He was unfortunate to suffer a first round loss to Marco Antonio Pacheco of Mexico in the singles competition. Pacheco defeated Cassidy on a scoreline of 6-2 7-5. Cassidy remains in the doubles, teaming up with Bart Theelan as the first seed in the tournament. The pair earned a first round bye, advancing them to the quarterfinals. Last week Cassidy competed in the Tony Trabert Cup as a part of Team Ireland, helping Ireland earn the 12th spot out of 17 teams.
Lesley O’Halloran enters the women’s 45 singles as the seventh seed, earning her a first round bye. She will play Debra Hyde of South Africa in the second round of the women’s tournament. O’Halloran partners Olga Shaposhnikova of Russia in the women’s 45 doubles, where the pair is the top seed. The duo will take on Martha Delia Rodriguez and Marcela Rubalcava Jiminez, both of Mexico, in the first round. O’Halloran finished play this week in the team competition, playing for Team Ireland in the Margaret Court Cup. Ireland finished 7th out of 13 in that tournament.
