Seniors World Team Championships: Day 2 Results
In group two of the Tony Trabert Cup for men of the forty category, the Irish men suffered a 0-3 loss to the second seeded French team. Liam Cassidy was defeated by Lionnel Barthez 6-0 6-0 in the number one singles in Mexico City. Richard Birchall suffered a similar fate in the singles, losing to Jacques Moers on a scoreline of 6-2 6-2. Ireland did not fare any better in the doubles, where Alan Donnelly and Niall Murphy were defeated by Nicholas Fourcade and Rodolphe Gilbert 6-2 6-2. Ireland will play Switzerland in their next match in the second group of the Cup.
Ireland also competed on day two in the Austria Cup for men of the fifty five age category. The Irish went up against the Spanish in the third group, but suffered a 0-3 defeat. Neagle Catchcart faced Jose Moreno in the number one singles, but Moreno was victorious 2-6 4-6. Conor Woods suffered the same fate, losing to Jose Cambra 1-6 0-6. In the doubles, Jimmy Wilson and Bryan Bailie were defeated by the strong duo of Jorge Camina and Sixto Cambra 0-6 0-6. Ireland’s next match in the third group will be against South Africa.
The Irish women of the fifty category also went up against the Spanish on day two in the Maria Esther Bueno Cup. Ireland was unfortunate to suffer a 1-2 loss to the Spaniards. Gail O’Meara and Geraldine Wynne earned Ireland their only victory, defeating Patricia Armet and Gemma Fontgivell on a scoreline of 6-2 6-3. In the singles, Jenny Burrows was defeated by Beatriz Pellon 0-6 1-6. Ellen McCartney also suffered a loss in the singles to Armet on a scoreline of 0-6 1-6.
