Kazan Kremlin Cup: Niland progresses in mens singles

Conor Niland and Louk Sorensen travelled to Russia this week for the ATP Challenger Tour event in Kazan.

Conor Niland had a 6-3 6-2 win over Anton Manegin (RUS) in the first round of the mens singles event. Niland previously defeated the Russian 6-1 6-2 at the Saransk Challenger event last August.

This is Niland’s first tournament since the Australian Open where he achieved a place in the final round of the mens singles qualifiers. In the second round he will play either Alexandre Kudryavtsev (RUS) or Sergei Bubka (UKR).

Niland is also taking part in the doubles event partnering Gero Kretschmer (GER). They will play German duo Tobias Kamke /Julian Reister in the first round later on today.

Louk Sorensen faced Evgeny Donskoy (RUS) in the first round and was unfortunate to suffer a 6-2 6-4 defeat to the Moscow native.

Sorensen, who has a ranking of 213, advanced from the Australian Open mens singles qualifiers to the second round of the main draw. Last week, he received a wildcard into the mens singles main draw at the ATP Heilbronn Challenger in Germany.
