Further Irish success at the Australian Open

John Morrissey and Sam Barry competed in the first round of the boys singles early Sunday morning and the boys doubles early this morning of the Australian Open Juniors. 

Sam Barry had success in both the singles and doubles and has advanced to the second round in both events. He defeated Victor Baluda of Russia 6-7(4) 6-4 6-3 in the boys singles. He will now face British no. 1 Oliver Golding in the second round.

Barry and McLachlan (NZL), who reached the final of the boys doubles at the Loy Yang Traralgon International last week had a first round 6-3 6-3 win over New Zealanders Franks and Grinter.

They will now play no. 4 seed Huang (TPE) / Uchiyama (JPN) in the second round. Barry and McLachlan will be hoping to replicate their win from last week when they defeated the Huang/ Uchiyama 6-3 6-4 in the semi final of the boys doubles.

John Morrissey had a tough opponent in the first round of the boys singles as he faced no. 8 seed Dominik Schulz (GER). The Dubliner who is currently ranked 30 suffered a 6-1 6-1 defeat in this event.

In the boys doubles, Morrissey partnered Bartosz Sawicki (POL). They were defeated by Latvian duo Kazijevs and Libietis on a scoreline 6-3 6-4.

Morrissey competed in the US Open qualifiers in September of last year and reached the third round of the Grade A Casablanca Junior Cup in Mexico earlier this year.
