Bowtell wins Donnybrook Junior ITF Girls singles crown

Amy Bowtell claimed her first ITF singles title this weekend as she stormed through the competition at the Junior ITF competition in Donnybrook. The Greystones girl was in impressive form throughout the week and went though the tournament without dropping a single set during her four matches in the week. The 15-year old was faced with British Qualifier Emilia Banos-Gregorians in the final. Banos-Gregorians showed great spirit to reach her very first ITF final, seeing off no less than three Irish competitors and the No.8 seed Klaartje Liebens of Belgium in the semi-final. In the final Amy’s superior experience in the latter stages of such events was enough to see off the 17 year-old British girl, in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

Belfast’s Lynsey McCullough was the best of the other Irish girls competing during the week, as the Wild Card entrant reached the semi-final before eventually going out to Amy Bowtell in the semi-final. ALison Clarke (Donnybrook LTC) and Susan McRann (Davaid Lloyd Riverview) also performed well during the event reaching the last eight of the event.

The Irish were unable to repeat the results enjoyed by the Irish girls during the week with all six Irish competitors going out in the first round of the main draw. This opened the way for Britain’s Joe Rogers to progress through to the final where he met fellow Brit, Alex Wilton. In an enjoyable match Rogers came out on top in a three set match 6-3,3-6,6-3 to claim his very first Junior ITF title.

There was to be better news for the Irish boys in the doubles event as Ciaran Fitzgerald teamed up with Britain’s Daniel Cochrane to take home the Boys Doubles Crown against Michael Ajibade and Colin van Beem 7-6(2), 7-6(3). Emilia Banos-Gregorians’ disappointment at losing the dingles final will have been eased somewhat when she claimed the Girls doubles title partnering Hannah Moran as they defeated the Irish partnership of Susan McRann and Hannahmay Morrissey 7-6(3), 6-2.
