14 Jun Morrissey reaches Junior ITF final in Morocco
Ireland’s John Morrissey continued his good form this weekend with another appearance in an ITF Junior Final, this time at the Grade 2 Clay event Racquette D’Or in Morocco. John was hoping to record his first title win of the year on the Junior ITF circuit after coming close earlier in the year in Thailand. However the top prize was to elude the young Dubliner and had to settle for the runners-up spot when he was beaten in straight sets by American, Junior Orr, 3-6, 3-6. Although he’ll be disappointed wit the final result his appearance in this Grade 2 final will push him up higher in the all-important Top 100 of the Junior World Rankings.
Morrissey recorded some excellent wins on his way to the final most notably against Sergey Shipilov of Uzbekistan hitting no less than 10 aces in the match to cruise past the World No. 202 in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. In the semi-final John’s performance went up a gear further where he powered his Finnish opponent, Micke Kontinen, off the court. Playing near perfect tennis Morrissey comfortably progressed to the final hitting winner after winner to record an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win.
This will be another great boost in confidence as John prepares for his third Junior Grand Slam of the year at Junior Wimbledon.
