Cyprus announce Davis Cup venue against Ireland

The Irish Davis Cup team will find themselves playing on a Plexipave hard court surface during the second round of the Davis Cup Euro/Africa Zone Group II against Cyprus on July 10th – 12th 2009. The Cypriot Tennis Association have decided to opt for the outdoor hard court surface at the National Tennis Centre in the state capital of Nicosia, after recording a hard fought 3-2 victory over Portugal in the first round of the event. The Nicosia venue boasts a 2,000 capacity facility and is sure to be packed with Marcos Baghdatis fanatics cheering on the Cypriot players. Baghdatis, the Cypriots No.1 tennis player, and 2006 Australian Open Runner-Up, will be the main threat to Ireland’s hopes of progressing into the third and final round of this years Group II Davis Cup Euro/Africa Zone where either Finland or Monaco will await the ties victors.

Unlike the surprisingly mild weather conditions that greeted the Irish on their arrival in Algiers earlier this month, Cyprus in the height of July could see on court tempratures soar to 33 degree centigrade an over. Mercifully the tie is due to be played in mid afternoon where the harsh Cypriot sun will be slightly more manageable for the Irish charges. As well as the weather to contend with, Ireland will have to improve on their last meeting with Cyprus, when they came to Fitzwilliam LTC in 2005 and recorded their first win over the Irish with much help from the aforementioned Marcos Baghdatis by two rubbers to one.

The order of play for the weekend is currently scheduled as follows:

Day One: 1600hrs (1300 GMT) to be confirmed

Day Two: 1800hrs (1500 GMT) to be confirmed

Day Three: 1600hrs (1300 GMT) to be confirmed

If you are holidaying in Cyprus at that time and want to cheer on Ireland, tickets are available from the Cypriot Tennis Federation at www.cyprustennis.com or by calling the Federation on +357 2244 9860. 1st Category tickets cost €25 (per day), 2nd Category €25 (per day) and Youth tickets are €10 (per day).
