Niland sees Ireland through in Davis Cup tie in Algiers

Conor Niland sent Ireland into the second round of the Euro/Africa Zone Group II Davis Cup by beating Eddy Chala of Algeria this morning (Sunday) on a scoreline of 7-6, 6-2, 6-1.  Ireland will now face Cyprus away in July (10th-12th), after they defeated Portugal at home.

 

In the final rubber of the weekend, Colin O’Brien defeated Ouassel Hared 6-4, 6-4.

 

In Saturday’s doubles match James McGee & Colin O’Brien defeated Abdelhak Hameurlaine/Sliamane Saoudi in a very tight match on a scoreline of 7-5, 3-6, 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4.

 

On Friday, Ireland’s Conor Niland beat the Algerian number 2, Slimane Saoudi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 after a short rain delay. Earlier that day, Eddy Chala (ALG) beat James McGee 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. James was called into play for Ireland after Louk Sorensen picked up a wrist injury during practice and was unable to play.
