23 Jan John Morrissey Qualifies For Junior Australian Open
After Sam Barry’s great result yesterday at a Grade One event in the Czech Republic Irish Tennis was celebrating another fine victory, this time in Melbourne Australia as John Morrissey won through the Qualifying Rounds of the Australian Junior Open to qualify for the Main Draw of the Grand Slam event.
John came through the Final round of Qualifying in the early hours of this morning (23rd January 2009) cruising past Italian Matthieu Vierin in straight sets, a player with a current world raking of 104 at Junior ITF level. The 6-2, 6-2 result was an upset in terms of the seedings system but the Fitzwilliam club player was always in control over the Qualifiers No. 4 seed.
The 16 year-old Dublin native has been in Australia for the past three weeks in preparation for the Grade A event taking part in two Grade One tournaments over the past two weeks. This allowed John to acclimatise to the Australian summer and get some all-important competitive matches under his belt and this has certainly seen him reach top form at the perfect time and has yet to drop at a set at the event.
John now moves into the draw for the Main Round of the event where he could meet some of the top ranked players in the world with the likes of World No. 2 Yuki Bhambri of India and Spanish No.1 Pablo Carrena-Busto. The main draw will be available from the Junior Australian Open website on Sunday night from www.australianopen.com
