23 Sep Davis Cup Draw 2009
The 2009 draw for the Davis Cup took place in BNP Paribas’ Madrid buildings on Tuesday afternoon, including Ireland’s group – Euro Africa Zone Group II. The draw could have been kinder to Sean Sorensen’s charges with a first round tie against Algeria in Africa at the bottom half of the draw. Algeria will be somewhat of an unknown quantity to the Irish, having never met the North Africans at international level before, and a likely trip to Algiers during March will likely be a tough encounter on clay in high tempratures. Ireland will face Algeria on the weekend of the 6th – 8th March 2009.
Win or lose Ireland will face a further tricky tie against either Portugal or Cyprus, possibly with Marcos Baghdatis in tow. Both teams were drawn against eachother last year with Portugal coming through on that occasion.
