East Coast Senior Open and North East Junior Open at Laytown/Bettystown
Summer 2009 Report
East Coast Senior Open at Laytown Bettystown
Laytown and Bettystown tennis club had a great turnout for their inaugural senior open tournament held at the end of June. An entry of over 170 competitors coupled with a week of beautiful sunny evening’s ensured success for the event. Many junior and senior members ventured out night after night to watch play that was both exciting and entertaining.
On Friday evening the mixed doubles final took place. Gladys Eagleton and John Smith won section A, with Geraldine Mc Cann and Noel Gaynor (Ardee) and Orla O’Shea and Jim Dunne (Dundalk) winning sections B and C.
Friday night was also social night, with a great barbeque, loads of food and refreshments provided. Given the brilliant atmosphere many players and spectators retired to the golf club centenary room to listen to music kindly provided by Smile and danced the night away.
On finals day, coach David Black won men’s singles section A and Kristine Kornakova recently (recruited from Latvia!) won ladies section A. Mark Maxwell won section B, with Alan Bowden and Conor Stein (from Dundalk) winning A doubles. Other winners on the day were Joan Smith, Ann Mc Culloch (A), Louise Ward, Kate Messayeh, Sean Black, and Ken Butterfield. From Skerries Colette Brangan took ladies B, and Sheyi Dosumah men’s C. From Dundalk, Sinéad Mulligan and Davina Pratt took ladies B.
Cash prizes along with Beleek china and Newbridge cutlery were presented by Captain Michael Bowden, as strawberries and cream were served to competitors and spectators alike. Not Wimbledon but pretty close!
Laytown/Bettystown tennis club would like to thank all competitors for taking part and our tireless open committee who volunteered their time and effort to make the competition such a success. With special thanks to our kind sponsors Ronan O’Reilly Thomas, Eagletons and Flogas.
North East Junior Open at Laytown Bettystown
With an entry of over 180 competitors, the north east junior open proved to be a big draw again this year.
The local Laytown/Bettystown juniors came together to compete against competitors all over the north-east. Our own talent shone through especially in the younger categories with our under-10s winning girls and boys’ singles plus the mixed events. Hugo Dwyer and Caoimhe Dunne played with sportsmanship and composure belying their age.
The number 1 seed Eva Jones from Dundalk fought hard for the under 14 title against Nicole Steeples in a close three setter ending on 7-5. Eva also won the under 16 singles with younger brother Neil “keeping it in the family” by winning under 12 singles and doubles with partner Patrick Nulty.
With our traditional tournament barbeque firing up in the background local “wildcard” James Ryan (James having only taken up tennis recently) with his talented partner Jillian Smith scooped the under15 mixed prize. Taking their lead, Alan Bowden (Laytown/Bettystown) and Aoibhean Tully (Kells) won the under18 mixed with Alan also taking top spot with Eoin Moynihan. Our great week of entertaining, exciting tennis concluded with the prize giving by Captain Michael Bowden following a sinful afternoon tea provided by the extremely generous Laytown and Bettystown mums.
